| Plugin name | Description | How Used on Indie Ave |
| Akismet |
Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not. |
A default plugin, should be used on every WP site. |
| Blog in Blog |
Create a blog within a blog using a category. This plugin basically shows posts in a category on a page using shortcodes. |
This may be the most important plugin used by Indie Ave. Almost all of the pages on this site consist of posts from certain categories. For example, the “Reviews” page consists of all posts labelled with “Review” category. Not complicated to use, but amazing in the power. |
| Collapsing Archives |
Allows users to expand and collapse archive links like Blogger. |
Used in the sidebar. |
| Collapsing Categories |
Uses javascript to expand and collapse categories to show the posts that belong to the category |
Since the site is so heavily category based, this widget allows all the posts to be included in the sidebar using collapsing entries. Really the best way to navigate the site. |
| Collapsing Links |
Uses javascript to expand and collapse links to show the posts that belong to the link category |
Similar to Categories, but for the links, which are also a major part of this site. |
| Fast and Secure Contact Form |
Fast and Secure Contact Form for WordPress. The contact form lets your visitors send you a quick E-mail message. Blocks all common spammer tactics. |
Allows form based contact with the site. Helps with spam control for messages. |
| Link Library |
Display links on pages with a variety of options |
This may be the second most important plugin, after Blog in Blog. It allows us to use the WordPress link manager, but then display all the collected links in an attractive and organized page – with automatic pagination, search, and a suggestion form. Very cool. |
| Show Post Shortcode |
Shortcode to display posts in a category: You can also use parameters |
This is used on the “Overview” page to list all the posts in each category. As new posts are added, they automatically show up in the Overview page – but it does require manual updating for each category header. |
| TinyMCE Advanced |
Enables advanced features and plugins in TinyMCE, the visual editor in WordPress. |
This just extends the editor used to make posts – it is only visible to writers, but makes things much easier. The features retained in the default WP editor are rather limiting. |
| reCPTCHA |
Integrates reCAPTCHA anti-spam solutions with wordpress |
Spam is a real problem. This helps things my making it harder to spam comments. |
| WP Js List Pages Shortcodes |
Support for “tree-page”, “list-pages” and “child-pages” shortcodes in your posts or pages to display all child and/or parent pages. |
This is the corresponding plugin to Show Post Shortcode, and is used to generate the list of pages in the Overview page. |
| WP Super Cache |
Very fast caching plugin for WordPress. |
This really makes site pages come up fast for users. Instead of requiring each page to be completely regenerated each time a page is viewed, which can be slow, a cached copy of pages are served up instead. Really essential when the server is fairly limited in power. |
| WP to Twitter |
Updates Twitter when you create a new blog post or add to your blogroll using Cli.gs. With a Cli.gs API key, creates a clig in your Cli.gs account with the name of your post as the title. |
This is used to automatically send a tweet every time a new post is posted. Keeps the site lively. |
